The museum's collections
The National Museum of Australia found its permanent home in the nation's capital Canberra in March 2001. It was formerly established by the National Museum of Australia act in 1980 and it preserves Australia's social history and explores many key issues including events and people. 50,000 years of indigenous heritage is profiled with the museum, with the museum holding the largest collection in the world of Aboriginal bark paintings and tools of stone. The museum was proclaimed Australia's best major attraction for tourists in 2005 and 2006.
