The portrait collection

The whole aim of the National portrait gallery is to increase awareness of the Australian people, including their identity, history, culture, and creativity. The gallery opened in December 2008, and is situated in the capital of Australia, Canberra on the King Edward Terrace and holds over 400 portraits of those who have shaped Australia and who continue to do so.

Exhibitions and themes

The National portrait gallery is home to the nation's portrait collection and numerous exhibitions. Among the exhibitions you can find, doppelganger, which is a virtual exhibition that explores contemporary ideas of portraiture in an online environment. Idle hours is a favourite of all visitors to the gallery due to its beautiful drawings, prints and paintings which depict quiet moods which are arranged in the times of the day that the work depicts.

Activities and things to do

Gallery assistants are on hand to give an introductory tour free of charge and there is also a thirty-minute tour for families, which features music and exploration, this is also free of charge. Families are also able to take part in fun activities in the gallery where all materials are provided. Projects include printing self-portraits, drawing and drawing, some of which require you to pre-book to avoid disappointment.
