Parliament House

Parliament house is situated in Australia's capital Canberra and is the meeting place of the Australian parliament; it took over from the provisional parliament house, which is now referred to as the old parliament house.

The new building was opened in 1988 and is thought to have cost over $1 billion in construction costs. The building was proposed in 1978 and a competition was announced to find a designer. The winning architectural firm out of 28 countries and over 300 entries was from New York. This stunning building is for the most part buried into Capital hill and capped by an enormous spire, which is topped with a huge Australian flag, half the size of a tennis court.

When entering the main foyer of Parliament house, which leads into the Great hall one of the first things visitors see, is the tapestry based on an Arthur Boyd painting and which can also be seen hanging in the great hall. The Great hall opens to reveal the Members hall with its centrepiece of a water feature. The Ministerial wing is found ahead of the Members hall and it is here that the Prime Minister and government ministers meet. The public galleries and main committee room is accessed by a very impressive marble staircase which ascends from the foyer.
