Canberra's Old Parliament House 1927 - 1988

Prior to the opening of the "old house", Parliament house was situated in Melbourne. In 1909, it was declared that the new capital was to be relocated to the Southern part of New South Wales, this site is known today as Canberra. It was here that old Parliament house as it is known today was erected. This building was used by the Australian members of parliament from 1927 and up to 1988 when the new parliament building was opened. The old house stands between Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament house.

Tours can be taken by way of self-guided or professional guided year round. Almost all areas of the old building are accessible including the House of Representatives chamber, Corridors of power and the Prime Minister's office, the Senate chamber and the Senate clubroom. Certain rooms within the old house can also be booked for private functions

Old parliament house is also home to the Museum of Australian Democracy where a variety of exhibitions can be seen. One of these is about the times and history of Old parliament house.
